Learn the skills for business success. 

If you own a small business or would like to open a business this course gives you a range of skills to help you develop processes to ensure your business thrives. Learn about producing business documents, small business practices, WHS laws, and how to use social media to your advantage.

Students will enrol in the following five units:

  • BSBWHS307 – Apply knowledge of WHS laws in the workplace: Understand essential safety requirements for running a compliant small business.
  • BSBTEC301 – Design and produce business documents: Create professional documents that support daily business operations.
  • BSBTEC302 – Design and produce spreadsheets: Build accurate and functional spreadsheets to manage business information.
  • ICTWEB306 – Develop web presence using social media: Establish and maintain a basic online presence to promote your business.
  • BSBESB403 – Plan finances for new business ventures: Learn how to plan and monitor finances to support a sustainable business.

It's important to think about the key attributes you are likely to need to study and work in the field of small business operations, Administration or customer service roles. Take a look at the essential skills and knowledge and ask yourself if there are any areas you might find challenging. This will help you decide if this course is the right choice for you: 

  • Be able to work under supervision and building confidence to work with others
  • Be able to develop good planning and time-management skills  
  • Be able to develop basic communication skills – written and verbal.
  • Show sound problem-solving and analytical skills  
  • Have sound computer skills and knowledge in the use of software applications including MS Word and Email  
  • Access to a computer and reliable internet service (online students)  
  • Ability to devote adequate set aside sufficient time and commit each week to study and attend class if required.
  • Willingness to participate in regular lecturer mentoring sessions

  • Concessions and the secondary school age fee cap do not apply to commercial courses (short courses), or Foundation Programs (i.e ESL and General Education).
  • Secondary school aged persons (in 2025, students born on or after 1 July 2007 who are at least 15 years old in 2025) undertaking training that is not part of a VET Delivered to Secondary Schools program, the maximum course (tuition) fee chargeable is $420. Additional resource fees and discretionary fees may apply. 
  • VET Student Loans for eligible courses and fee caps may be subject to changes implemented by the Australian Government.
