Already have relevant workplace skills, industry knowledge or previous study?
Recognition of Prior Learning, also known as RPL, allows existing skills and knowledge to be assessed towards a qualification. Previous study, workplace experience, training, licences, volunteering and life experience may all contribute towards recognition.
A successful RPL application may reduce the amount of study required, lower overall course fees, provide credit towards a qualification, recognise the skills and knowledge you already have, and help you achieve a qualification sooner.
For many experienced workers, RPL can be an efficient pathway towards formal qualifications and career progression.
How RPL works
- Self-assessment
You will complete an initial self-assessment to determine whether RPL may be suitable for your circumstances. - Competency conversation
You will meet with an assessor to discuss your skills, experience and previous learning. This may include providing work samples, licences, qualifications, references and employment history. - Skills demonstration
Depending on the qualification, you may be asked to demonstrate practical skills or complete competency-based activities. - Confirmation
The assessor may contact referees or other third parties to confirm information included in your application. - Assessment outcome
Once assessment is complete, you will be advised whether you have achieved full recognition, partial recognition or if further evidence is required.

Our student support teams work alongside students throughout their training journey, helping them access advice, services and support when they need it. Whether you need help planning your studies, managing personal challenges or accessing specialist services, we are here to support your success.
Our student services teams can assist with course planning, study pathways, career advice, youth support, fee and payment information, learning support and referrals to specialist services when needed.
Students can also access tutoring, mentoring, accommodation support and guidance throughout their training journey.
We are committed to creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
Dedicated support is available for students with disability, Aboriginal students, international students and students who may benefit from additional language, literacy or numeracy assistance.
Our goal is to ensure every student has the opportunity to participate fully and achieve their best.
From orientation through to graduation, students have access to the tools and resources needed to succeed.
Orientation sessions help students understand what to expect, access support services, connect with their campus and become familiar with systems such as the Student Portal and online learning platforms.
Students can access timetables, applications, payments, study information, important notices and online learning resources through the Student Portal, helping them stay connected and organised throughout their studies
Many students begin their training journey with us before they turn 18.
Central Regional TAFE operates as an adult learning environment that prepares students for employment and further study. Students are expected to take responsibility for their learning and behaviour while benefiting from the support of lecturers, student services and campus staff.
