This skill set is designed for anyone looking to build or enhance hospitality skills, including responsible service of alcohol and espresso machine operation. Participants may range from beginners with no prior experience to those already working in the industry or seeking a career change.

Over 10 weeks (1 day per week), learners will gain practical skills and knowledge in preparing food and beverages, with a comprehensive introduction to kitchen, bar, and front-of-house operations. Training begins with essential hygiene and food safety units, followed by hands-on practical units that require practice before assessment.

This course will cover:

  • LWAPRO102 Participate in a team project
  • SITHFAB021 Provide responsible service of alcohol
  • SITHFAB025 Prepare and serve espresso coffee
  • SITXFSA005 Use hygienic practices for food safety

  • Have a high priority to food safety, cleaning and personal hygiene
  • Able to manage time and work under pressure
  • Able to work well in a team and be able to work with others and relate to and respect people from a range of cultures and backgrounds
  • Have good time-management and organisational skills to work under pressure  
  • Have good communication skills to interact with others respectfully  
  • Be able to follow instructions, work health and safety procedures  
  • Sufficient physical ability to stand and/or bend for extended periods of time, holding and serving from trays and carrying multiple items
  • Be comfortable interacting with all types of beverages and foods including seafood, meat, eggs, pork and nuts.  
  • Be aware that the hospitality industry involves typically full-time hours including evenings and weekends.  
  • Have literacy and numeracy skills to read and interpret menus, safety data and operational manuals.

  • Secondary school aged persons (in 2025, students born on or after 1 July 2007 who are at least 15 years old in 2025) undertaking training that is not part of a VET Delivered to Secondary Schools program, the maximum course (tuition) fee chargeable is $420. Additional resource fees and discretionary fees may apply. 
  • VET Student Loans for eligible courses and fee caps may be subject to changes implemented by the Australian Government.
