Advance Your Laboratory Technique Skills

This qualification reflects the growing need for skilled laboratory technicians across a wide range of laboratory settings, including mining, construction, pathology, and manufacturing. The program is delivered in a self‑paced external format, with all practical components completed at an approved workplace.

This qualification represents the role of workers who apply a variety of laboratory technologies to conduct scientific and technical tests across most industry sectors, using specialised technical knowledge. Graduates perform a broad range of routine and complex tests, often working with atypical samples and instruments with multiple operating variables.

Workers in this field communicate sample requirements to colleagues, and may liaise with suppliers to resolve product non‑conformance issues. They may also demonstrate laboratory methods to others and train team members in reliable sample collection and basic testing procedures.

When choosing a course, it's important to think about the key skills and knowledge you'll need, as well as how you'll be assessed. Take a look at this information and consider if you might face any challenges in meeting the course expectations and requirements.

  • Hold a Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques OR
  • Hold a Certificate IV or higher-level qualification in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) discipline OR
  • Can provide evidence of technical laboratory skills, knowledge and employment experience.
