Located on Geraldton's coastline, the Batavia Coast Maritime Institute (BCMI) is one of Western Australia's leading maritime, aquaculture and environmental training centres.

Students learn through hands-on experiences that connect classroom knowledge with real-world industry practice. From training aboard commercial vessels and visiting the Abrolhos Islands to working in specialist laboratories and research facilities, BCMI offers learning opportunities that are difficult to find anywhere else in Australia.

Whether you're interested in maritime operations, aquaculture, laboratory science, conservation and ecosystem management, or environmental studies, BCMI provides practical pathways into employment, further training and university study.

Students have opportunities to participate in field-based training, industry projects, research activities and practical learning experiences that build confidence and workplace-ready skills.

Small class sizes support personalised learning, while strong industry partnerships help ensure training remains relevant, practical and connected to future career opportunities.

Training is available from Certificate I through to Diploma level, alongside a range of industry-relevant short courses, VET Delivered to Secondary Students (VETDSS) opportunities and work placements.

Learning facilities and experiences

BCMI has been purpose-built to support hands-on training across maritime, environmental and aquaculture industries.

Maritime training facilities

Students have access to a fleet of vessels used in maritime, fishing and aquaculture training. This includes the commercial training vessel Master Class, which supports practical learning activities, industry training, scuba diving programs and trips to the Abrolhos Islands.

Aquaculture and marine science

The BCMI aquaculture hatchery provides students with hands-on experience using industry-standard equipment and production systems. Students learn about marine ornamentals, food fish and pearl oyster production while building practical skills relevant to a growing global industry.

Environmental and laboratory facilities

Students can gain experience in a fully equipped environmental testing laboratory used for commercial water and soil analysis. These facilities support practical learning and help students develop the technical skills needed in laboratory science and environmental industries.

Conservation and ecosystem management

Purpose-built nursery and greenhouse facilities support training in conservation, land management and environmental restoration. Students gain experience working with native plants, sustainability practices and habitat management in realistic learning environments.

Student spaces

BCMI provides a welcoming study environment with computer facilities, study spaces, free parking and a student common room where students can relax, connect and recharge between classes.
