Dive into Science: Scientific Diving Skill Set
This Skill Set course reflects the role of individuals who work as entry-level to intermediate seafood industry operators and scientific divers, undertaking SCUBA-based fieldwork, inspection and monitoring activities while applying workplace health and safety, biosecurity and environmental compliance requirements.
This Skill Set course develops the knowledge and practical abilities required to operate effectively and safely within the seafood and diving industries, with a strong emphasis on environmental responsibility, biosecurity, and work health and safety compliance.
It includes the capability to recognise and report signs of aquatic disease or pests, and to contribute to workplace health and safety processes while working productively as part of a team in the seafood industry.
Learners gain skills to plan and conduct SCUBA diving activities across a range of depths (from open water to 40 metres), including the use of specialised breathing gases such as enriched air nitrox, as well as assembling, maintaining and operating diving equipment.
The course also covers performing complex diving operations, managing risks, and responding to emergency situations, including diver rescue procedures.
In addition, this Skill Set course supports participation in restricted scientific diving operations, enabling individuals to assist with research, monitoring and inspection tasks using SCUBA under regulated conditions and industry standards.
