On Thursday 11 September, Central Regional TAFE joined the nation in recognising R U OK? Day, encouraging conversations that can make a difference in people’s lives.
R U OK? is a national suicide prevention charity and public health initiative that reminds us to connect with those around us, check in, and have meaningful conversations that may help someone through a difficult time. The focus is on empowering everyday people – friends, family, colleagues and peers – to notice the signs of struggle, reach out with care, and help connect others to support well before they are in crisis.
To honour the day and start those important conversations, CR TAFE campuses hosted a series of relaxed gatherings. At Kalgoorlie and Northam, staff and students came together over BBQ lunches with cupcakes. Geraldton held a morning tea that brought people together in a warm and supportive atmosphere, while Carnarvon and Exmouth created safe spaces for connection through smaller gatherings with cupcakes. All attendees were invited to wear yellow in support of the celebrations.
At Central Regional TAFE, mental and emotional health are key pillars of our wellbeing strategy. R U OK? Day serves as a reminder that checking in with our colleagues, friends, and family can make a real difference. It’s not just about asking the question — it’s about listening, following up, and showing genuine care. Small conversations, every day of the year, can help build a safer and more supportive workplace.
While we celebrated R U OK? Day with food, fun and connection, the most important message is that checking in doesn’t need a special occasion. A cupcake lasts a moment, but a conversation can last a lifetime — and taking the time to ask “R U OK?” can make all the difference.
