Central Regional TAFE (CR TAFE) Geraldton hosted the 2024 Graduation and Awards Ceremony at the Queens Park Theatre in Geraldton on Thursday 10 April, celebrating the achievements of graduates and recognising Major Award and Outstanding Achievement winners across a range of study areas.

In 2024, close to 2,100 students completed their training with CR TAFE across all nine campuses, including over 1,471 students graduating with qualifications in the Midwest/Gascoyne region. Six students were named recipients of Major Awards.

Midwest Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year, sponsored by Rio Tinto, was awarded to Kalirra Tesling, who graduated with a Diploma of Beauty Therapy. Kalirra’s dedication to creating positive client experiences reflects her strong work ethic and passion for the beauty industry and commitment to delivering an exceptional service.

Midwest Apprentice of the Year, sponsored by Community Bank Geraldton – Bendigo Bank, was awarded to Jake Bignell, who completed a Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade Fitting. Jake’s ability to communicate effectively, coupled with his professionalism, makes him a model for aspiring tradesmen and women.

Midwest Cultural Diversity Training Award, sponsored by Foreshore Geraldton, was presented to Abigeal Idowu, who graduated with a Certificate III in Individual Support. Looking ahead, Abigeal is focused on advancing her career in community work and advocacy.

Midwest Trainee of the Year, sponsored by Humfrey Land Developments, was presented to Lucy Osborn, who completed a Certificate III in Business. Lucy’s future aspirations are to extend her business career by completing Certificate IV in Business at CR TAFE. The Certificate III was the first step to help her understand the concept of business and what avenues it has to offer. She is hoping to complete an accounting and bookkeeping course.

Midwest Vocational Student of the Year, sponsored by Mid West Chamber of Commerce, was awarded to Emma Simmons, who graduated with a Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care. Emma has developed an excellent rapport with both the children and her co-workers, earning their trust and respect through her warm and engaging personality.

Midwest International Student of the Year, sponsored by Mitsui E & P Australia, was presented to Louise Hill, who graduated with a Certificate IV in Environmental Monitoring and Technology. Louise impressed the panel with the many examples of her involvement in the local community, holding presentations about threatened ecological communities at a primary school, regularly volunteering to go ‘Boxthorn Bashing’ in her spare time with the Northern Agricultural Catchments Council (NACC), and also is a passionate sea bird rescuer and member of the Chapman River Friends Group.

CR TAFE Acting Managing Director, Karen Watts, praised students for their commitment and achievements throughout the year.

“Central Regional TAFE’s Graduation and Awards events are a fantastic opportunity to celebrate our students’ successes. In 2024, we saw students from all campuses excel beyond expectations throughout their learning journey,” Ms Watts said.

“CR TAFE students continue to impress with their dedication and determination to complete their training. Their accomplishments set them on solid pathways for future careers and inspire others in their community to follow their lead.”

“We would like to congratulate all our graduates and award winners for their hard work, and we wish them every success in their future careers.”

Ms Watts also acknowledged the positive impact of CR TAFE graduates on the region:

“More than 1,400 qualified and job-ready graduates ready to add value to local Midwest and Gascoyne businesses, bring their skills to the care sector, to the hospitality industry, automotive and engineering businesses and so many more.”

“These are more than 1400 people ready to advance their own employment or further study goals — to pursue their aspirations.”

“Sometimes people are surprised at just how wide the range of courses is at their local TAFE.”

CR TAFE would like to acknowledge and thank our 2024 sponsors and industry partners. Their generous support makes these awards possible and contributes significantly to the strength of training in the Midwest and Gascoyne regions.
