Be prepared for an emergency.
Gain the knowledge and practical skills to provide first aid treatment for a wide range of emergencies until the arrival of professional medical help. This training is a nationally recognised first aid course and covers the following:
- First aid and emergencies
- Legal, workplace and community factors
- Risk management,
- Assess the scene and casualty,
- Maintain hygiene,
- Use manual handling techniques,
- Bleeding, burns, wound and injuries,
- Environmental impact,
- Poisons.
Includes the below units of competency:
- HLTAID009 - Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation [OCD26]
- HLTAID010 - Provide basic emergency life support [OCD33]
- HLTAID011 - Provide First Aid [OCD30]
Students must be able to kneel on the ground/floor for a minimum of 2 minutes, in order to perform CPR.
To make informed choices when providing first aid, students need to develop a range of practical and decision-making skills. These skills help ensure they can respond safely, confidently, and effectively in emergency situations.
Skills a student should have to make informed choices when providing first aid:
- Recognise and assess emergency situations
- Ensure safety for self, casualty, and others
- Perform CPR with correct body movement and technique
- Manages bleeding, burns, and fractures
- Provide first aid for medical conditions (asthma, anaphylaxis, shock, etc.)
- Communicate clearly and calmly in an emergency
- Follow instructions and report incidents accurately
- Use infection control and PPE correctly
- Make safe and ethical decisions (consent, privacy, duty of care)
- Know when to call for help or seek further assistance
