The world of engineering is very exciting and offers fantastic job and career opportunities in a wide range of occupations.

This qualification will give you the knowledge and skills to improve your prospects of employment in an engineering or related occupation. You will learn about the industry, so that you can have a better understanding of what particular area of engineering you would like to get into.

You will also gain entry level skills and knowledge to be job ready, including occupational health and safety in the workplace; how to undertake basic engineering projects; using a range of workshop machines and hand and power tools; and the use of different welding and fabrication equipment for specific jobs.

This qualification includes a work experience component which learners must complete as part of their training and assessment. Students are required to complete 40 hours in the workplace.

  • Work experience can be in any of the trade areas (Light, Heavy, Fabrication /welding, machining workshops).
  • A Work experience manual is provided by CRTAFE, and hours are logged by the students. The lecturer will transpose the information for tracking purposes.
  • Students undertaking unpaid work experience are covered under the College’s insurance policy with the Insurance Commission of Western Australia (RiskCover).

To attain this qualification, you are required to successfully complete twelve (12) units of competence, comprising four (4) core and eight (8) elective units selected from the options provided below. A work practice component of 40 hours will also be completed.

  • Secondary school aged persons (in 2025, students born on or after 1 July 2007 who are at least 15 years old in 2025) undertaking training that is not part of a VET Delivered to Secondary Schools program, the maximum course (tuition) fee chargeable is $420. Additional resource fees and discretionary fees may apply. 
  • VET Student Loans for eligible courses and fee caps may be subject to changes implemented by the Australian Government.
