Make a career of caring when it matters most.

This qualification reflects the role of workers who provide self-directed recovery-oriented support for people affected by mental illness and psychiatric disability. Work involves implementing community-based programs and activities focusing on mental health, mental illness and psychiatric disability.

Work is undertaken in a range of community contexts such as community based non-government organisations; home based outreach; centre-based programs; respite care; residential services, rehabilitation programs; clinical settings; or supporting people in employment. Work is carried out autonomously under the broad guidance of other practitioners and professionals.

It’s important to consider the key personal and professional qualities required to succeed in mental health study and work. Take a look at the essential skills and knowledge and consider if you might face any challenges in meeting the course expectations and requirements to make an informed choice about the suitability of this course for you:

  • Demonstrate empathy and respect when working with people from diverse ages, cultures, and backgrounds, fostering a safe and inclusive environment.
  • Show genuine compassion, patience, and enthusiasm for supporting individuals experiencing mental health challenges, including those with complex or additional needs.
  • Possess strong verbal and written communication skills to convey information clearly, actively listen, and document interactions accurately.
  • Apply effective problem-solving skills and respond calmly to situations involving immediate safety concerns, using appropriate crisis intervention techniques.
  • Follow established procedures, take direction, and work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Be prepared to encounter sensitive topics and behaviours that may be distressing or triggering and use self-care strategies to maintain wellbeing.
  • Have competent computer skills to access digital records, complete documentation, and use online mental health resources.
  • Recognise and adhere to personal and professional boundaries, always ensuring confidentiality and ethical conduct.
  • Be willing and able to undertake unpaid workshops and mandatory field placements of a minimum of 80 hours if not working within the industry.
  • Be over 18 years of age and obtain required clearances such as a Working with Children Check and, a National Police Clearance—note that any criminal convictions may appear on official records and could impact placement opportunities.
