This course is half price for everyone (excl. school students) as part of the Lower Fees, Local Skills initiative. Fees are also capped at $1,200; or $400 if you're aged 15—24 or eligible for a concession. Find out more here.

Gain the knowledge and skills to communicate and work effectively in the youth sector, developing and managing youth programs, promoting social, emotional and physical wellbeing, responding to critical situations, working with youth at risk, assisting collective action, developing and maintaining professional networks, working with cultural diversity, ethical behaviour and legal responsibilities.

You will help to improve lives and directly contribute to putting young people at risk towards a better path.

This qualification has mandatory work placement including at least 200 hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of units of competency.

Before starting this course, it’s important to think about the key skills and personal qualities that will help you succeed in your studies and future work with young people. These include: 

  • A genuine interest in supporting and empowering young people
  • The ability to build respectful and trusting relationships
  • Strong communication and active listening skills
  • Emotional resilience and self-awareness when working with sensitive or challenging situations
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • A willingness to follow legal, ethical, and organisational frameworks
  • Respect for diversity and inclusion, particularly when working with people from different cultural backgrounds
  • The capacity to manage the physical and emotional demands of youth work
  • Basic technology skills to complete online learning activities, research information, and maintain records
  • A commitment to ongoing learning, reflection, and professional growth
