It provides a pathway to work across a range of tourism and travel sectors, including travel agencies, tour wholesalers and operators, holiday parks, resorts, attractions, cultural and heritage sites, and small tourism businesses. Work may be undertaken in an office environment where tourism products and services are planned, in the field where they are delivered, or through operational activities such as housekeeping, grounds maintenance, and customer service, or a combination of these.

Skills in this qualification must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State or Territory legislation, Australian standards, and industry codes of practice.
