Blackboard is transitioning to Canvas

We are excited to let you know that Central Regional TAFE is moving to Canvas, a new online learning platform designed to make your learning experience simpler, more flexible and more engaging.

Canvas will gradually replace Blackboard as our online learning system, bringing together your learning materials, assessments, feedback and communications in a modern, easy-to-navigate environment.

You may be currently enrolled in a Unit that spans this transition period, where you may complete components of the unit in Blackboard and other components in Canvas, or you may complete some units in Blackboard and others in Canvas.

Your lecturer will guide you through this process and support you every step of the way to make the change as smooth and straightforward as possible.

Blackboard is transitioning to Canvas from now until 31 December 2026, when it will become read-only. You can still access Blackboard using the link below.

Why Canvas?

Canvas offers a range of benefits that will help you stay organised and connected throughout your studies, including:

  • A modern, user-friendly design that is easy to navigate.
  • Improved access from mobile devices, allowing you to learn wherever you are.
  • Clearer unit layouts, making it easier to find learning materials and assessments.
  • A personalised dashboard that brings all your units together in one place.
  • Streamlined assignment submissions and faster access to feedback.
  • Better communication tools to help you stay up to date with announcements and important information.
  • We are confident that Canvas will provide a more connected and engaging learning experience.

What Is Changing?

Canvas will become the primary online learning platform used by CR TAFE.

As part of this transition, you may notice that:

  • New units are delivered through Canvas.
  • Learning materials may look different.
  • Assessment submission processes may change slightly.
  • Communication and announcements from lecturers may occur through Canvas.

Importantly, your enrolled units, assessment requirements and qualification outcomes will remain the same. The transition to Canvas only changes how you access and interact with your learning online.

What You Need to Do

You will receive information from your lecturer about when your unit will be available in Canvas via learn.tafe.wa.edu.au(opens in a new tab) .

Once advised, log in to Canvas using your normal CR TAFE student account details.

After logging in:

  • Open your unit(s) in Canvas.
  • Review the learning materials and assessments.
  • Read any announcements from your lecturer.
  • Familiarise yourself with the new layout and navigation.

Before Blackboard is retired, we strongly recommend that you save copies of any important work stored in Blackboard, including:

  • Assessment submissions
  • Assessment feedback and results
  • Learning resources you may wish to keep
  • Any other documents important to your studies

CR TAFE will retain official records of your assessments. However, we recommend that you save your own copies of important work, feedback and results so you can easily access them during and after the transition.

After the transition, continue completing your learning activities and assessments through Canvas as directed by your lecturer.

At the end of Semester 2, Blackboard will move to read-only access. You will still be able to view learning materials and previously submitted assessments; however, you will no longer be able to submit assessments or make any changes within Blackboard.

During the transition period, some existing units may remain in Blackboard while newer units are delivered through Canvas.

Please follow your lecturer's advice regarding where to:

  • Access learning materials
  • Submit assessments
  • View feedback and results
  • Check announcements and updates
