Learn welding basics
This Skill Set course describes the skills and knowledge required to cut, weld and bend materials in the resources and infrastructure industries.
It applies to individuals working in operational roles, who typically operate under supervision to carry out a defined range of tasks involving established routines and procedures, while taking responsibility for the quality of their work outcomes.
The program was developed in response to community interest in practical trade-based skills and the need for accessible, entry-level training opportunities for learners who may not yet be ready to undertake a full qualification. Delivering the elective unit RIISAM205E Cut, bend and weld materials enables learners to gain hands-on experience using industry-relevant tools and equipment in a safe and supportive environment.
Learners can expect to develop practical skills in cutting, bending and welding materials, along with safe work practices and increased confidence in workshop environments.
Safety wear requirements
Students are required to wear personal protective clothing at all times, including:
- Steel capped safety boots
- Clear safety glasses
- Protective clothing suitable to hot works (long pants, cotton long-sleeved shirt).

- Total fees quoted include tuition fees and resource fees only. You may also be required to purchase text books, uniforms or other personal equipment that are not included in this fee estimate.
- For Lower Fees, Local Skills (half-price) courses please refer to additional eligibility information above.
- Concession rates: If eligible, proof of concession must be presented.
- Concessions and the secondary school age fee cap do not apply to commercial courses (short courses), or Foundation Programs (i.e ESL and General Education).
- Secondary school aged persons (in 2026, students born on or after 1 July 2008 who are at least 15 years old in 2026) undertaking training that is not part of a VET Delivered to Secondary Schools program, the maximum course (tuition) fee chargeable is $420. Additional resource fees and discretionary fees may apply.
- VET Student Loans for eligible courses and fee caps may be subject to changes implemented by the Australian Government.
